Personal Angle of Sephardi-Ashkenazi Relations at the Turn of the 20th Century

The controversy of choice in Israel is the tension between Ashkenazim and Sefardim (Mizrahim). It seems odd that we still address this issue as the intercommunity amalgamation goes so well, and the rate of “intermarriage” exceeds 60 %. However, there is nothing new about it.
I will bring the personal story of my family as seen through the eyes of my late grandmother, Miriam Bouskela-Gutmann, who published her story “The Two Sofas” regarding her own search of identity between Sefardi and Ashkenazi from over 100 years ago.

Barukh Binah is a longtime career diplomat who served until his posting as Ambassador to Denmark only in the United States.
Barukh is a seven-generation Israeli born who comes from a family of writers, painters, scholars, army officers and civil servants. His true passion is Hebrew and English literature and he translates poetry for his personal enjoyment.
