Lord Get me High - Shlomo Carlebach and the Hippies
Moshe-David HaCohen, Malmö /Sweden
Language: English
Session: This session of Limud will engage in the adaptation of Jewish tradition through the interaction of Shlomo Carlebach with the hippie counterculture of the Sixties in the United States. Though Shlomo Carlebach is internationally known as one of the most influential composers of Jewish music in the twentieth century, his impact as an adapter of Jewish tradition for the modern world has only recently received focus in the academia.
His success in bridging the Jewish tradition for the hippies depended on his ability to be creative, innovative, and adaptive, in actuality creating a new 'authentic' Jewish tradition. In this session we will explore the world of the street people turned Holy Beggars, through a unique adaptation of a Bratslav Hasidic text by Shlomo Carlebach.
