This session of Limud will engage in the adaptation of Jewish tradition through the interaction of Shlomo Carlebach with the hippie counterculture of the Sixties in the United States. Though Shlomo Carlebach is internationally known as one of the most influential composers of Jewish music in the twentieth century, his impact as an adapter of Jewish tradition for the modern world has only recently received focus in the academia.
His success in bridging the Jewish tradition for the hippies depended on his ability to be creative, innovative, and adaptive, in actuality creating a new 'authentic' Jewish tradition. In this session we will explore the world of the street people turned Holy Beggars, through a unique adaptation of a Bratslav Hasidic text by Shlomo Carlebach.

Bio:
Moshe David HaCohen is a presidential doctoral candidate at the University of Haifa and is in the final stages of his dissertation on Shlomo Carlebach and the counterculture. He has presented his interdisciplinary research at international conferences worldwide, including the Association for Jewish Studies, the University of Colorado, UCLA and Tel Aviv University.
Moshe David arrived to Malmö just a wek ago with his family to serve as the rabbi of the Jewish Community of Malmö as well as to establish an interfaith center for dialogue with the local Muslim Imaam and community.
